About The Orr Memory Clinic

The Orr Memory and Geriatric Behavioral Clinic is a specialty service dedicated to providing care and educating families about memory loss. Our approach focuses on patients and family members or caregivers by providing compassionate care and resources every step of the way. The evaluation process involves looking at all the aspects of memory loss and the medical conditions that impact memory and anxiety and will help identify the best options and treatments available.

William B. Orr, Ph.D., MD, DFAPA

William B. Orr

Dr. Orr is a neuroscientist and psychiatrist with additional certification in both Geriatric and Forensic Psychiatry. He earned his Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh and then his M.D. at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. He completed his specialty training in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and for more than 10 years was Director of Geriatric Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Department of Psychiatry, as well as Director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Training Fellowship at the University of Minnesota and VA Medical Center in Minneapolis. In 2014, Dr. Orr was awarded Distinguished Fellowship status by the American Psychiatric Association.

Dr. Orr transitioned from academic work to private practice in 2005. He specializes in the evaluation and management of patients with dementia in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He is founder and director of the Orr Memory and Geriatric Behavioral Clinic in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. In addition, he has served as both Medical Director of multiple acute, inpatient psychiatric units across the state of Minnesota, as well as consultant to various long-term care groups who provide assessment in assisted living and skilled nursing centers around the state. His primary clinical interests are in early detection of dementia, differentiation from depression in the elderly, and management of agitation.

Dr. Orr also has maintained a private forensic psychiatry consultation practice since 1996. In this role he has served as consultant to various courts and legal firms across the Midwest. He has lectured multiple times over the years to legal groups and regularly serves as an expert witness in both civil and criminal matters. His special forensic interests include determination of testamentary capacity, issues related to undue influence, and the effects of aging and cognitive impairment on vulnerability in the elderly.

Sue Bikkie, DNP, GNP-BC, APRN

Sue is board certified as a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner. She holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Minnesota, a Master of Science from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Science from Bethel College. As a GNP/GCNS within the Allina Health System, Sue was involved with implementing geriatric programs that focused on preventing adverse outcomes for older adults such as falls, delirium and polypharmacy. While on staff, she was active on the Allina wide falls prevention committee and was recognized by the Allina board. Ms. Bikkie collaborated with the interdisciplinary team on the Geriatric Mental Health unit at Unity Hospital. Through Allina Health, Sue has managed a long term care practice. Ms. Bikkie was involved with the Minnesota Hospital Association on implementing protocols for fall prevention and delirium. She has given numerous presentations on geriatric topics, locally, regionally and nationally. She is a John A. Hartford Geriatric Scholar.

Jana Gegen, DNP, PMHNP-BC, APRN

Jana is a dually board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She holds her Doctor of Nursing Practice and Bachelor of Science degree from Metropolitan State University. Jana is also a board-certified Holistic Nurse. Jana has spent many years of her career working with older populations and those with cognitive challenges. Jana believes that providing care to patients and their families is best achieved with a holistic comprehensive approach. This include a strong emphasis on strength-based care. Orr Memory clinic has a unique approach in that families are an integral aspect in the care of their patients. This not only provides the most effective way of caring for patients who are facing extreme challenges, but also provides support for all of those who are involved in the patient’s life. This unique and comprehensive approach allows Jana to provide the truly holistic care she is passionate about.

Heidi Hoppe, PMHNP-BC, APRN

Heidi Hoppe

Heidi is a PMHNP. She holds both Bachelor and Master of Science in Nursing degrees from Minnesota State University – Moorhead, and a Post-Master’s certification as a PMHNP from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professionals.

Heidi’s work experience has always involved geriatric patients, from early on as a nursing assistant in long-term care facilities to advancing in nursing leadership roles in long term care facilities, and geriatric behavioral health. In practice, Heidi strives to thoroughly evaluate patients to determine what may be contributing to cognitive, behavioral, and medical symptoms being experienced.
Heidi believes that a collaborative approach between environmental factors and care giver approaches are vital to assist patients with dementia in maintaining the safest conditions and highest quality of life. Heidi feels strongly that the patient and their care givers should be involved in determining the most appropriate and individualized treatment plan approach for that patient. Specific to her assessment would include milieu adjustments, therapeutic interventions, and medication management approaches.
As a PMHNP caring for geriatric patients - Heidi’s ultimate goal is to provide patients and their loved ones with high quality treatment options for their specific condition(s). 

Carly Curry, PMHNP-BC, APRN

Carly Curry

Carly is dually board certified as an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She graduated with honors from St. Catherine University and completed her psychiatric education via Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. She studied nursing abroad in China, Nicaragua and Africa. She is passionate about integrative health and finding holistic methods to meet health goals by incorporating all elements of wellbeing.

With over 25 years of healthcare experience, Carly has learned that partnering with patients and meeting them where they're at, provides a solid foundation which leads to a therapeutic and trusting relationship. She believes in a no-nonsense approach and is down to earth and relatable. She offers insight into the challenge of caring for a loved one who suffers from dementia, as she has first-hand knowledge of personally caring for a loved one struggling with Alzheimer’s. On her off time she enjoys spending time with family, exercising, playing sports, and traveling.

Julie Langer, RN, Member APNA

Julie Langer

Julie is a Registered Nurse who works with all patients and family members of the Orr Memory Clinic. She graduated from Winona State University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and is also a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. Julie’s career background is working as a nurse on different units including medical/surgical inpatient unit, perioperative unit, gastroenterology unit and providing triage for emergency, mental health, and family medicine calls. Along with empathy, easy going communication style makes it easy to keep communication lines open between patients and family members. Julie is very pleased to be a part of the Orr Memory Clinic team!
